PEORIA RIVERMEN HOCKEY HALL OF FAME The Peoria Rivermen Hockey Hall of Fame (Rivermen HOF) was created in 1990 to honor those individuals, players or builders (team management, et al.), who have served the Peoria Prancers (1982-84, International Hockey League-IHL) and the Peoria Rivermen (1984-1996, IHL; 1996-2005, ECHL; 2005-Present, American Hockey League-AHL) over the last 25 years. This season, the Silver Anniversary for professional hockey in Central Illinois will be celebrated with the 25 Greatest Rivermen of All-Time, presented by U.S. Cellular, which includes several Rivermen HOF members. There are 29 current members of the Rivermen HOF, which consists of two wings – a Players/Coaches wing and a Builders wing. There are 21 players and three coaches in the Rivermen HOF, along with five members of the Builders wing, which consists of those who have been honored for their contributions to the greater good and/or the administration of professional/amateur hockey in Central Illinois. Seventeen (17) of 21 players went on to play in the National Hockey League (NHL), amassing nearly 4,800 games (4,799) played among them. The five members of the Builders wing include (alphabetically): the late Pete BardezBanian, the late Bud Gingher, Mark Olson, current senior account executive Ralph Rashid and current Rivermen Co-Owner Bruce Saurs. There were no inductees during the 2005 calendar year, but in 2006, Richard (Ricky) Pion and Pat Jablonski became the 28th and 29th members of the Rivermen HOF, respectively. Pion, a forward, toiled for the Rivermen in the early 1990’s and was known for his pesky play and penalty-kill prowess. Jablonski, a goaltender, stood guard “between the pipes” during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Both Pion and Jablonski were members of the Rivermen in 1990-91 that rode to a still-world-record, 18-game winning streak in November 1990 and a 1991 IHL Turner Cup Championship. Jablonski teamed with Guy Hebert during the 1990-91 season to serve as the club’s formidable netminding tandem. With their addition to the Rivermen HOF, there are now 14 players/coaches from 1990-91 team that are members, including (alphabetically) David Bruce, Kelly Chase, Nelson Emerson, Hebert, Dominic Lavoie, Head Coach Bob Plager, Michel Mongeau, Dave Thomlinson, Steve Tuttle, Tony Twist (not a playoff participant), Darren Veitch and Jim Vesey. With the Rivermen HOF’s inception in 1991, the charter inductees were Head Coach Pat Kelly, Darrell May and Doug Evans, all of whom were members of the 1985 IHL Turner Cup Championship team. Other Rivermen HOF members from that championship team are (alphabetically): Denis Cyr, Bob Fleming, Brad Kempthorne and Lee Norwood. Grant Rezansoff and Paul Fenton, who played for the Peoria Prancers when professional hockey began in Central Illinois in 1982, are also in the Rivermen HOF. There is currently only one Rivermen player, Doug Evans, inducted who represented the team during its ECHL tenure as well. Qualifications for player/coach/builder induction are as follows: following nomination, a player/coach/builder must be one of the top two vote-getters and be named on 75 percent of the ballots. Additional requirements for player induction include: an interval of four full seasons since the player completed his Rivermen career and a minimum of 50 Rivermen games for skaters and 30 games for goaltenders. Additional criteria for builder induction are based on contributions to the game, years of service and other distinguishing factors. Current Rivermen HOF committee members, a total of 12 that are elected in staggered two-year terms, are (alphabetically): Jeff Camp, Steve Castleman, Cyr, Dave Eminian, Gordon Henderson, Ron Hinton, Mike Olson, Tim O’Rourke, Bart Rogers, Norm Ulrich, Linda Vlasis and H. Wayne Wilson. |
