Overtime Winner Gives Houston 2-0 Series Lead 2011-04-15
The Houston Aeros beat the Peoria Rivermen3-2 in
overtime Friday night at the Toyota Center to take a two games to none lead in
the West Division Semifinal. Carson Mcmillan scored the game winner at the
11:34 mark of the extra session as the series shifts to Peoria for game three on
Jake Allen turned aside 43 shots and suffered
the loss in a game in which Peoria never trailed. They held two different one-goal leads and
each time the Aeros quickly tied the game.
Peoria’s Anthony Peluso opened the scoring at
the 10:10 mark of the first period on a wrist shot from the left half boards
that went over the glove of Matt Hackett. Just 14 seconds later, Houston’s
Jarod Palmer walked into the slot and wristed one over the glove of Jake Allen
unassisted to even the score at one.
The Rivermen regained the lead at the 7:12
mark of the middle frame on the power play with Cracknell’s second of the
playoffs. Derek Nesbitt’s pass to the slot was blocked and Cracknell gathered
it and wristed a shot by the blocker of Hackett. Derek Peltier picked up the
second assist on the goal.
The Aeros tied the game on a power play of
their own 1:32 later. Patrick O’Sullivan made a cross-ice pass to Chad Rau who
was near the bottom of the left circle and Rau wristed a shot by a sliding Allen
to even the score once again.
With no goals in the final 31:16 of regulation
the game, the 2-2 tie carried into overtime.
After a Brennan Evans turnover at the Peoria blueline
McMillan broke into the Peoria zone in a two-on-one with Palmer. Palmer sent a
deflected puck back to McMillan and he tapped in the game winner.
Hackett stopped 32 of 34. The Rivermen
converted on one of their six power-play chances while the Aeros went 1-for-5
on the man advantage.
The Rivermen are now 0-4 all-time in overtime
playoff games with all four losses coming at the Toyota Center in Houston.
Peoria will host Game 3 on Monday at 7:05 p.m.
