Rivermen Sit Atop Midwest After 3-1 Win in Chicago

The Peoria Rivermen moved into sole possession of first place in the Midwest Division with 73 points as they beat the Chicago Wolves 3-1 at Allstate Arena on Wednesday night.  Jake Allen stopped all 18 shots he faced in the first period and 38 of the 39 in the game to pick up his third straight win and give the Rivermen a perfect 3-0-0 start to their current five game road trip.

Despite being outshot 18-3 in the first period, the Rivermen held a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes on Jonathon Cheechoo’s 19th of the season.  Patrick O’Sullivan, who has at least one point in each of his five games with the Rivermen, stole the puck from a Chicago defender and setup Cheechoo in the right circle at 15:01.

The Wolves tied the game at the 7:06 mark of the second period on Mark Mancari’s team-leading 26th of the season. Byron Bitz sent a pass from behind the net out to Mark Matheson at the blue line and his slap-shot was tipped in front by Mancari high over Allen.

Just 2:32 later Adam Cracknell tipped in his 20th of the year to regain the lead for Peoria. Brennan Evans let a slap-shot go from the left point and Cracknell redirected the puck through his legs up over the shoulder of Lack. Evans picked up his 100th professional point of his career with the assist.

T.J. Hensick added an empty netter late for his 20th of the year to give the Rivermen the 3-1 win.

The Rivermen improved to 5-3-1 this year against the Wolves with their final meeting set for April 15, the last day of the regular season, in Chicago.

The Rivermen head to Charlotte on Tuesday for the first of back-to-back games against the Checkers at 6 p.m.  The game can be heard on CD Country 107.9 in Peoria, or online through
