Rivermen Win Third Straight In 2-0 Victory

Ben Bishop stopped all 26 shots on Saturday while T.J. Hensick and Jonathan Cheechoo each recorded two points in a 2-0, Peoria Rivermen win over the Toronto Marlies at Carver Arena.  The shutout is Bishop’s league-leading fourth of the year and helped Peoria improve to 14-14-1-1 on the season.

After a scoreless opening frame, Peoria grabbed the first lead of the game at 8:07 of the second courtesy of Cheechoo’s 10th of the year. From the bottom of the left circle, Hensick fed the puck into the crease seconds after a Toronto power play expired. Marlies goaltender Jussi Rynnas made an initial save, but the rebound came right to Cheechoo who found the back of the net. Hensick and Derek Nesbitt were credited with the assists.

Bishop and Rynnas each made crucial saves on a number of breakaway opportunities to keep the game close and Peoria held onto its one-goal lead under late in the third period.

With just 30 seconds to play, Hensick sealed the game with an empty netter for the final tally and his 10th of the season. At the 19:30 mark, Cheechoo intercepted a pass at the red line and immediately found Hensick, who turned and found the empty net.

Peoria finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play, but a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.

The Rivermen play their third straight game on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. against the Milwaukee Admirals. The game can be heard in Peoria on CD Country 107.9 or by visiting
