The Peoria Rivermen set a season high with 47
shots on goal and built themselves a 5-0 lead on their
way to a 5-2 win over the Charlotte Checkers on Saturday night in front of
7,306 at Carver Arena. A total of 13 different Rivermen recorded at least a
point as they defeated the Midwest Division leaders in their first visit to
Peoria improved to 25-21-2-1 and regained sole
possession of third place in the Midwest Division with the win. The Rivermen
also tied Rochester for eighth place in the Western Conference with 53 points.
Ben Bishop stopped 22 of 24 shots on goal in
his league-leading 21st win on the campaign while T.J. Hensick (1g, 1a) and
Danny Syvret (2a) turned in multi-point efforts.
Peoria jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with
goals just 1:13 apart after the midway through the first period. At 13:07, Derek Nesbitt’s one-timer found the
back of the net on a cross-ice feed from Hensick. Anthony Nigro scored his career-high 10th
of the season at 14:20 off a feed from Chris Bruton. The point was Bruton’s first as a Rivermen.
Cade Fairchild added to the Rivermen lead at
11:43 in the second period during four-on-four play. He walked down the wall and tucked a shot
just inside the near post and past into the top of the cage. Tyler Shattock made
it 4-0 just 1:52 later on a snapshot from the slot. Stefan Della Rovere and
Brett Sonne recorded assists on the play.
Hensick improved the lead to 5-0 with his
team-leading ninth power-play goal of the season 53 seconds into the third
period. His goal came on a five-on-three advantage while the Rivermen finished
the game with one goal on eight chances.
Charlotte’s Jerome Samson spoiled Bishop’s
shutout attempt with a goal at 3:11 in the third period and Zach Boychuk
finished the scoring at 16:41 with an assist from A.J. Jenks.
Peoria outshot the Checkers in each of the
three periods, including 12-2 in the first and 20-11 in the third. Their 20 shots in the third period matched a
season-high which they set on Dec. 4, 2011 against Rockford.
