Rivermen Drop Opener in Abbotsford
The Peoria Rivermen allowed three goals during the second period and fell 4-1 to the Abbotsford Heat in the 2012-13 season opener at the Abbotsford Entertainment & Sports Centre on Friday night. Anthony Peluso scored Peoria’s only goal as they outshot the Heat 25-16 but struggled to beat goaltender Danny Taylor.
Ben Walter scored at 10:47 of the first to give the Heat a 1-0 lead. The airborne puck came from the corner and deflected off Walter’s body and past Allen.
Peoria ran into penalty problems in the second period as all five of their minor penalties occurred in the middle frame. Just 1:14 into the second period Roman Horak put the Heat up 2-0 by sliding one under the pads of Jake Allen. The Heat were able to score two goals just over two minutes apart to increase their lead to four. Ben Street scored on the power play at 14:05 and Sven Baertschi added a goal at 16:17.
Mike McKenna replaced Allen in net at the start of the third period. Allen finished with 10 saves on 14 shots while McKenna stopped both of the shots he saw over the final 20 minutes.
Peluso scored Peoria’s lone goal at 9:02 of the third by snapping one past Taylor’s blocker from the right circle. The tally was assisted by Adam Cracknell and Evgeny Grachev.
The Rivermen finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play while the Heat were 1-for-5.
