Goaltending Battle Ends in Overtime Loss
Jake Allen held the Peoria Rivermen in the game and T.J. Hensick forced overtime before ultimately falling 2-1 to the Chicago Wolves on Wednesday night at Allstate Arena. Allen made 24 saves before Zach Miskovic netted the game-winner at 2:59 of overtime.
Zack Kassian’s first goal of the season at 13:51 of the first period stood up for most of the night. With the Wolves on a power-play, his pass from behind the net banked in off a Rivermen skate to give the Wolves the lead.
Chicago goaltender Matt Climie earned No.1 star honors with his 30 save performance that included 14 saves alone in the third period. Hensick’s power-play goal at 12:40 of the third period tied the game following a great feed across the crease from Derek Nesbitt. Jaden Schwartz earned his second assist of the season on the play as well.
In overtime, former Rivermen Brett Sterling ripped a shot wide of the net and as it bounced around Andrew Gordon slipped a pass to Miskovic in the slot who ripped a shot past Allen.
Both teams finished 1-for-5 on the power play.
The Rivermen will be in search of their first win on Friday night when they welcome the Rockford IceHogs to Carver Arena for their home opener. The first 5,000 fans in attendance will receive a Rivermen magnet schedule, courtesy of Heritage Bank. For tickets or information check www.rivermen.net or call (309) 676-1040.
