Checkers Hand Rivermen Second Straight Shutout


Brett Sutter earned the hat trick and Justin Peters made 19 saves as the Charlotte Checkers handed the Peoria Rivermen a 6-0 loss Sunday night at Carver Arena. Following last night’s 4-0 defeat, the Rivermen were handed their second straight shutout by the Checkers.




The first goal of the game didn’t come until 12:04 of the second period. Zach Boychuk scored his fifth goal of the year to give the Checkers a 1-0 lead. Boychuk got behind the Peoria defense and backhanded a shot top shelf to score Charlotte’s 16th power play goal of the year. Michal Jordan and Peters earned assists on the tally.


The Checkers added another goal just 2:07 later. Drayson Bowman fired a shot from the slot over the glove of Allen to score his seventh goal of the season. Jeremy Welsh and Jordan earned the assists.


With 1:23 remaining in the second frame Sutter scored his first goal of the year to make the score 3-0. From behind the net Jerome Samson fed one to Sutter who one-timed the puck past Allen.


At the 12:08 mark of the third period Sutter scored his second goal of the night to increase Charlotte’s lead to four goals. Rasmus Rissanen took a shot from the point that deflected off the back of Sutter and over Allen. Justin Krueger was given the secondary assist on the play.


Nicolas Blanchard scored his first goal of the year at 16:18 on the man-advantage to make it a 5-0 contest. With 1:31 remaining Sutter scored his third goal of the evening to earn the hat trick.


Charlotte outshot the Rivermen 35-19 while going 2-for-2 on the power play.
