Grand Rapids Hold off Rivermen 4-1
The Peoria Rivemen scored just 5:10 into the first period but failed to score again as the Grand Rapids Griffins handed them a 4-1 loss on Saturday night at Carver Arena. It was just a 2-1 lead late in the third period before Tomas Tatar scored twice in the game’s final 2:16 to end Peoria’s chances.
The Rivermen (6-9-2-1) will not play again for six days when they head to Chicago to face the Wolves on Dec. 1.
Chris Bruton deflected a shot by Scott Ford under the right arm of Tom McCollum early the first period. His first goal of the year was also assisted by Cody Beach and set off a stream of teddy bears towards the ice. The annual Teddy Bear Toss benefited the Salvation Army.
Grand Rapids tied the contest at 12:42 of the first. Adam Almquist’s shot deflected off the post and after Landon Ferraro’s rebound was stopped by Mike McKenna, Francis Pare punched in his seventh goal of the season.
Tomas Jurco scored his fourth goal of the season at 10:18 of the second frame to give the Griffins their first lead of the evening. After a Ferraro-feed in front of the net, Jurco pulled the puck from the backhand to the forehand, from just outside the crease, and slid it past McKenna to make the score 2-1.
Tatar clinched the win for Grand Rapids with two goals lat breakaway tallies. At 17:44, Tatar intercepted a pass from and raced in alone. He beat McKenna for the unassisted tally and then found the empty net with 45 seconds remaining.
The Rivermen will be on the road on Saturday against the Chicago Wolves at 7:00 p.m. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
