Admirals Score Late to Beat Rivermen 2-1
Despite controlling play for most of the game, Ryan
Ellis scored his first goal of the season with 3:38 remaining in the third to
lift the Milwaukee Admirals to a 2-1 victory over the Peoria Rivermen Thursday
night in the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
The Rivermen outshot Milwaukee 33-22 in the game but goaltender Jeremy
Smith helped steal the game with 32 saves.
Adam Cracknell scored Peoria's lone goal for
the second straight game and extended his point streak to a team-high seven
games. He put the Rivermen on the board
first at 14:29 in the opening period. Derek Nesbitt fired a one-timer from the
high slot that Smith knocked down with his glove and was subsequently pushed in
by Cracknell. T.J. Hensick also was credited with an assist, extending his
scoring streak to five games.
Peoria outshot Milwaukee 17-6 in the first
frame but had just the 1-0 lead to show for it.
Milwaukee answered in the second period, as
Chris Mueller scored his team-leading 11th goal of the year. Following
a faceoff win, Taylor Beck's wraparound attempt jumped to the front of the net
and was batted in by Mueller in the low slot. The goal, at 6:50 of the second
period tied the game.
In the final frame, both goalies were up to the
task on several scoring opportunities. Ellis fired a shot from the right point
that deflected off a Rivermen defender and into the top of the net for the
game-winner at 16:22.
The game featured only six combined penalty
minutes with the Rivermen posting an 0-for-2 mark on the power play while
Milwaukee was 0-for-1.
