Late Push Comes Up Short in Texas

Regner scored goals and the Peoria racked up 16 shots on goal in the third
period, but the Rivermen couldn’t overcome a four-goal deficit on Saturday in a
5-2 loss to the Texas Stars at Cedar Park Center. Jack Campbell made 36 saves overall
while Matt Fraser scored twice for Texas.
Texas took an early 1-0
lead courtesy of Jamie Oleksiak's third of the year just 4:40 into the first. The
defenseman fired a shot from the point that hit off the post and found its way
past Jake Allen. Colton Sceviour scored a shorthanded goal at the 18:16 mark to
make it 2-0 contest.
At the 7:30 mark of the
second frame Maxime Fortunus forced in a rebound to make it 3-0. Roussel and
Mike Hedden added assists on the play. The 13th goal of the year by
Fraser, on the power play increased, Texas’s lead to four goals. With just 1:20
left in the period, Sceviour made a between the legs pass to Fraser, who was
alone on the doorstep to tap in the tally.
Cracknell broke the
shutout 3:43 into the third period. Cracknell received a cross-ice pass from
T.J. Hensick and roofed the puck over Jack Campbell for his seventh goal of
this campaign. Derek Nesbitt had the secondary assist on the goal.
With 11:08 remaining in
the third, Regner, shorthanded, scored his first goal of season to cut the
Texas lead in half. Andrew Murray and Jaden Schwartz combined to get Regner the
puck on a 3-on-1 break.
Peoria pulled their
goaltender for the extra attacker with 1:56 remaining in regulation. After
multiple Rivermen chances, Fraser put in his second of the night into an empty
net to make the score 5-2.
The Rivermen went 0-for-3
on the power play while the Stars went 1-for-4. Peoria outshot Texas 38-36.
