PROCKOW LIFTS PEORIA PAST FIREANTZ, 2-1
2013-11-16

In a game defined by excellent goaltending and unique special team's play, the Peoria Rivermen used a shorthanded goal midway through the third period from Nick Prockow for a 2-1 win over the Fayetteville FireAntz at the Crown Coliseum Saturday night. Goaltender Eric Levine (1-2-1) stopped 26 of 27 shots for his first professional win.

With the victory, Peoria improves to 3-5-1-0 on the season and erases a six-game losing streak, which began Nov. 1. In addition, the Rivermen are now 1-5-1-0 in the month of November.

The opening frame was an impressive display of defense for both teams who took a scoreless tie into the first intermission. Despite 19 total shots in the period, netminders Levine and Fayetteville’s Kyle Rank were perfect early on.

After nearly 30 minutes, the Rivermen scored the first goal of the game at 9:05 in the second. Prockow set up Cole Ruwe with a pass to the high slot, where the Rivermen defenseman fired a shot through traffic for his first goal of the season. Prockow recorded the only helper.

The FireAntz answered at 5:29 of the third period, just 19 seconds into a Peoria power play set up by an unsportsmanlike penalty to Brett Liscomb. Shorthanded, John Clewlow stole the puck in his own zone and went coast-to-coast on a 2-on-1, and eventually went forehand to beat Levine low. It was Peoria’s fourth shorthanded goal allowed this season.

Less than three minutes later, the Rivermen responded with some shorthanded magic of their own at 8:01 of the third. Following a slashing minor to Dustin Parks, Charlie Carkin led a 2-on-1 charge down the ice nearly identical to Fayetteville’s score. In transition, Carkin found Prockow who scored blocker side for a 2-1 final. It was Prockow’s fourth of the year and team-leading eighth point.

Fayetteville pulled Rank for the final 79 seconds of the game, but only managed one shot on goal.

The Rivermen finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play and a perfect 4-for-4 on the penalty kill. Rank (2-1-0) stopped 32 of 34 shots in the loss.

Peoria outshot the FireAntz 34-27. Prockow (1g, 1a) was the first star and the only player who recorded a multi-point night.

The Rivermen return home on Thursday for the first of three games against the Pensacola Ice Flyers. The puck drops at 7:15 p.m. at Carver Arena, and can be heard locally on CD Country 107.9 FM or online at www.cd1079.net.
