Peoria Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel has announced defending SPHL Sher-Wood Goaltender of the Year, Kyle Rank (right), and fan-favorite Taylor 'Bubba' Larsen (left) have been re-signed for the 2014-15 season.
Consequently, the Rivermen have now re-signed six players from last year’s squad that finished third in the league’s regular-season standings. Those include: Charlie Carkin, Nick Wheeler, Garrett Vermeersch, Steve Morra, Rank and Larsen.
Rank, 26, enjoyed a break-out performance last season and set a new SPHL single-season record with eight shutouts (seven with Peoria). Overall, his 1.89 goals against average and .938 save percentage were second-best in league history, while his 19-8-3 record displayed the third-most wins among goaltenders. In addition, Rank was named the SPHL Easton Player of the Week for Feb. 10-16 and honored as an SPHL First Team selection last March.
“I’m really excited,” Rank said. “From the moment I got to Peoria, the organization treated me with so much class and respect. From the top down it has been amazing and it shows in the product we put on the ice every night.”
“The organization, front office and coaches make it easy for the players to do their job. It’s going to be an exciting year.”
A native of Islip, New York, Rank was acquired from the Fayetteville FireAntz on December 18, 2013, in exchange for future considerations. Prior to turning pro, the fourth-year veteran spent four years at Bentley University in Waltham, Massachusetts from 2008-2012. Over 62 career games, he produced a 24-28-6 record with a 3.16 goals against average and a .903 save percentage.
Larsen, 25, finished fourth in Rivermen scoring last season with 30 points (14g, 16a) and joined Carkin as the only two players to appear in every game for Peoria. Additionally, Larsen was named the recipient of the Pete BardezBanian Trophy last March as the booster club’s most popular player.
A native of Newton, Massachusetts, Larsen played four years of collegiate hockey at Assumption College from 2008-2012. Over 101 career games, he produced 137 points (61g, 76a) and 223 penalty minutes.
