Score(Home/Away): 1-3 W
The Peoria Rivermen topped the Western Conference leading Oklahoma City Barons Friday night 3-1 at the Cox Convention Center. Jake Allen stopped 31 shots to push Peoria to their third consecutive win and move them into fifth place in the Western Conference.
The Rivermen have just three games remaining in the regular season and will face the Houston Aeros on Saturday at the Toyota Center.
Mark Cundari scored the game’s first goal at the 14:11 mark of the first period to give Peoria the early lead. Cundari carried the puck around the net and forced it to the front from the bottom of the circle. It deflected off Barons’ goaltender David LeNeveu for his third of the season and first since Jan. 12.
After a scoreless second period, the Barons tied the affair with a goal from Ryan Keller at 10:17 of the third. Josh Green and Antti Tyrvainen earned helpers on the play. The Rivermen responded 63 seconds later with Phil McRae’s 22nd goal of the season. Derek Nesbitt setup McRae in the slot, who ripped a shot under the blocker of LeNeveu.
Jonathan Cheechoo scored an empty-net goal, his team-leading 25th of the season, in the final minute to seal the victory for the Rivermen.
Peoria was outshot 32-27 while neither team was able to score on the man advantage.
The Rivermen will take on the Houston Aeros Saturday at 7:35 p.m. All games can be heard on CD Country 107.9 FM or online through www.rivermen.net.
