A Peoria Rivermen five-game winning streak came to a halt on Wednesday night in a 6-2 loss to the Charlotte Checkers in front of 4,920 at Time Warner Cable Arena. The Checkers offense, which has scored just four times in their last three games, erupted for four goals in the second period to take control of the game.
Shaun Heshka and Chris Bruton scored third period goals for the Rivermen while the Checkers peppered Rivermen goaltending with 46 shots on goal.
Jake Allen stopped 30 of 34 shots in the first 40 minutes of action, but was replaced by Alex Stalock who saved 10 of 12 shots on goal in the third period.
With the loss, the Rivermen fell to 36-26-2-1 with 75 points, and remain in second in the Midwest Division and fifth in the Western Conference.
After a scoreless first period, Charlotte potted four markers within a 7:57 stretch to open the second. Chris Durno scored his fourth of the season at 2:48 before Riley Nash notched a top-shelf tally just 3:05 later. Chris Terry added to the Checkers lead at 8:55. Terry cut through the Rivermen defense and flipped a shot past a helpless Allen to make it 3-0 Charlotte. Just four seconds into a power play, Matthew Pistilli improved the lead to 4-0 at 10:45 shortly following a faceoff in the Checkers offensive zone.
Heshka helped Peoria avoid the shutout with a one-time goal from Evgeny Grachev at 6:50 in the third period. Grachev sent a cross ice pass from the left boards to the far side of the goal where Heshka met the puck and sent a quick shot past Mike Murphy.
Charlotte improved the lead to 6-1 on two third-period goals from Zach Boychuk at 7:40 and 15:21, respectively.
Bruton finished the scoring at 16:27. McRae sent an initial shot on goal before Bruton sent the rebound past Murphy for his second goal of the year.
