Score(Home/Away): 2-3 L
The Peoria Rivermen took the ice at Carver Arena for the first this season in an exhibition matchup with the Chicago Wolves. Peoria rallied from down 2-0 to tie the game only to fall 3-2 on Kevin Connauton’s second goal of the night.
The Rivermen will travel to Rockford on Saturday to face the IceHogs for the second and final game of the preseason.
Chicago’s Adam Polasek let a one-timer rip from the right point that rang off the post midway through the first period, but at the end of the frame neither team was able to find the back of the net. With 4:03 remaining in the first Matt Clackson for Chicago and Peoria’s Kyle Hagel engaged in the game’s only fight.
The Wolves opened the scoring at the 7:06 mark of the middle frame when Taylor Ellington’s clearing attempt bounced off the glass and sent Sebastion Erixson in on a breakaway. Erixson deked to his left and put a backhand over the glove of Jake Allen.
Chicago added to their lead at the 16:56 mark when defenseman Kevin Connauton beat Allen with a wraparound.
Peoria’s Danny Syvret cut the Chicago lead in half with a one-timer on the power play from Jake Gannon and T.J. Hensick. Hensick found Syvret near the top of the left circle and his slap shot went over the left shoulder of Karel St. Laurent, who replaced Matt Climie midway through the second.
The Rivermen tied the game at 2-2 just 6:04 into the third period on a power-play goal from Hensick. Hensick’s wrister from the top of the right circle found a way between the arm and body of St. Laurent. Syvret and Allen earned assists on the play.
Chicago regained the lead for good at the 9:55 mark of the third just six seconds into a Tyler Shattock minor penalty. Connauton’s blast from the point found the back of the net through traffic for his second of the game assisted by Erixson and Nate Longpre.
The Rivermen open the regular season at Carver Arena against the Milwaukee Admirals on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Peoria Civic Center box office, online at www.rivermen.net or over the phone at 309-676-1040.
