Opponent: @Rockford IceHogs
Date: March 19, 2011 7:05
Score(Home/Away): 4-3 L
Igor Makarov scored the go-ahead goal with 2:38 left in the third and Alec Richards made 29 saves as the Rockford IceHogs came from behind to beat the Peoria Rivermen 4-3 on Saturday night at the Rockford MetroCentre. Dave Scatchard and Akim Aliu both scored in the third period to give the Rivermen leads but each time Rockford responded with a goal of their own.
With the loss, the Rivermen (37-26-2-5) have 81 points and sit in a third-place tie with the Oklahoma City Barons with only 10 games remaining in the regular season.
The IceHogs scored just 2:48 into the first period. Brian Connelly bounced a shot off of a Rivermen defender to give Rockford an early 1-0 lead. Brandon Pirri and Rob Klinkhammer earned assists on the play.
Peoria’s response came at 8:13 on Graham Mink’s team-leading 21st goal of the season. He deflected a Daryl Boyle slap shot from the high slot and through Richards’ legs. It was the first game back for both Boyle and Anthony Nigro since Feb. 5, ending an 18-game absence from the lineup.
The 1-1 score held up until the third period when the teams began trading goals. Just 1:42 in, Scatchard fired a shot, from along the way, which found a way through multiple players into the net. It was the second goal in as many games for Scatchard and his sixth of the year, assisted by Nick Drazenovic and Aliu.
After penalties by Derek Peltier and Tyler Shattock 40 seconds apart, the IceHogs had a 5-on-3 in the minutes following Scatchard’s goal. Jeff Taffe took a slap shot from the top of the right circle that sailed through Bishop just 1:38 after the Rivermen had taken the lead.
At 8:12, Aliu scored a goal off a great feed from Drazenovic to complete a two-on-one down low in the zone only to have the IceHogs re-tie the game just 34 seconds later. With Bishop behind the net to stop a puck, Peter LeBlanc took the puck from a defender and slipped it in before Bishop could get back into the net.
Makarov banged home a rebound at 17:22 to put the IceHogs ahead for good. The Rivermen outshot the IceHogs 32-30 and finished the season series with a 6-4-0 record against Rockford.
