Kevin McDonald
General Manager
Kevin McDonald is in his eighth season as the
general manager of hockey operations for the Peoria Rivermen. On May
8, 2009 he was named an assistant general manager of the Blues in addition to his duties in Peoria. McDonald
joined the Blues organization prior to the 2001-02 season as a
professional scout. He scouted professional talent for the Blues for two
seasons before the organization promoted him to director of
professional scouting in 2003, a post he held until 2012. In June 2005, he was given the added
responsibilities of being the general manager of the Rivermen.
In his role as the general manager of hockey operations, he is
responsible for facilitating the development of Blues prospects into
players who are capable of playing in the National Hockey League (NHL)
with the Rivermen’s parent club. As the director of professional
scouting of the St. Louis Blues, McDonald oversees the Blues’
professional scouting department to ensure that the organization
maintains a detailed profile of every player in both the NHL and the
American Hockey League, as well as a familiarity of the best players in
other professional hockey leagues. He also works closely with Blues in
coordinating the transfer of players between the Blues and the Rivermen
and in acquiring professional hockey players.
As the director of professional scouting for the Blues, McDonald
oversees the professional scouting department to ensure that the
organization maintains a detailed profile of every player in both the
NHL and AHL, as well as a familiarity of the best players in other
professional hockey leagues. He also works closely with Blues President
John Davidson and Senior Vice President and General Manager Larry Pleau
in coordinating the transfer of players between the Blues and the
Rivermen and in acquiring professional hockey players.
The 2012-12 season is McDonald’s 25th in the NHL. He began his career in
professional hockey in 1988 as a member of the communications
department of the New York Rangers, one of the NHL’s “original six”
franchises. McDonald served in a variety of capacities in that
department, including director of communications. Following the 1993-94
season, when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup, he moved into the Rangers’
hockey operations department and worked as an assistant to Rangers
General Manager Neil Smith during the lockout-shortened 1994-95 season.
From 1995 to 2001, McDonald served as a professional scout for the
Rangers, traveling throughout North America and Europe to evaluate
professional hockey players.
McDonald joined the Blues organization prior to the 2001-02 season, when
his former boss with the Rangers Larry Pleau hired him as a
professional scout for the Blues. McDonald scouted professional talent
for the Blues for two seasons before the organization promoted him to
director of professional scouting in 2003. Then in June 2005, he was
given the added responsibilities of being the general manager of hockey
operations of the Rivermen.
A product of Lawrence, Massachusetts, McDonald holds a master’s degree
in sports management from the United States Sports Academy in Daphne,
Alabama, and a bachelor’s degree in communications from Boston College.
He resides in North Andover, Massachusetts, where he lives with his wife
Lauren, his two children Sean and Kayleigh, and his three step-children
Joseph, Jenna, and Daniel.
