Hauswirth’s Milestone Pair Help Rivermen Ground Ice Flyers

Green shines in home debut as Peoria climbs over .500 mark

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen got 20 saves from rookie Tyler Green and a pair of goals from veteran center Jake Hauswirth as they beat the Pensacola Ice Flyers 4-1 Friday night at Carver Arena. The win improves the Rivermen to 3-2-1 on the season before they rematch the Ice Flyers tomorrow night.

The Rivermen opened the scoring in the middle stages of a back-and-forth first period. Cody Dion took a pass from Luke Eibler and skated in as part of a 3-on-1 break. The big winger raced down the right-wing boards and patiently held the puck before flicking a hard wrister over the shoulder of Pensacola goaltender Drew Fielding to give the Rivermen a 1-0 lead.

The second period saw Peoria cash in twice on a plethora of power plays. The Rivermen made it 2-0 at 2:38 of the middle frame when Dakota Klecha snapped a shot past Fielding from above the left circle on a 5-on-3 man advantage. Peoria got another 5-on-3 power play 1:09 later when Joe Sova’s shot from the left point rebounded off Fielding’s pad to the stick of Jake Hauswirth, who buried it from the right dot to make the score 3-0.

The Rivermen continued piling on in the final minute of the second period. Peoria captain Dan Bremner carried the puck down the goal line from the right corner, and his shot rebounded up into the air. Hauswirth, who was stationed on the left post, batted the puck out of the air from below his waist to make it 4-0.

The Ice Flyers broke up Green’s shutout bid at 8:37 of the third period. After the puck ping-ponged around the left-wing circle Austin McKay fired the loose puck through traffic and by Green for the final 4-1 score.

Green earned his third win of the season in four goals between the pipes for the Rivermen. The rookie stopped 20 of 21 shots handled to improve to 3-0-1 in his first professional season.
