Rivermen Fall 2-1 to FireAntz In Saturday Shootout

Klecha’s second-period goal not enough as Peoria win streak halted at eight

Fayetteville, NC – The Peoria Rivermen and Fayetteville FireAntz traded second-period goals in a defensive struggle before the FireAntz prevailed 2-1 in a shootout Saturday night at the Crown Coliseum. The loss, Peoria’s first since an overtime defeat against Knoxville February 18, drops the Rivermen to 26-10-10 before a Sunday Matinee rematch with the FireAntz in Fayetteville.

The Rivermen opened the scoring early in the game’s second period after a scoreless first. With play ongoing in the Fayetteville zone, the Rivermen worked the puck to Peoria defenseman Cole Hutchinson in the high slot, and his shot was tipped past Fayetteville goaltender Sean Bonar by Rivermen winger Dakota Klecha for a 1-0 lead at 3:54 of the period.

The FireAntz tied the game past the midway point of the second period. Fayetteville winger Bobby Chaumont took a pass from teammate Tayler Thompson and carried into the left wing of the Peoria zone, and his shot from the left-wing circle deflected off the glove of Rivermen goaltender Tyler Parks and into the net for a 1-1 score at the 13:13 mark of the second.

The game remained tied through the third period and overtime, and the game descended into a shootout. The first shooter for each team was denied, and after Peoria’s second shooter was turned away, Thompson cranked a slap shot from between the circles past Parks’ blocker for a 1-0 shootout lead. The shootout would remain scoreless the rest of the way, and the FireAntz walked away with a 2-1 victory.

Parks stopped 31 of 32 shots he faced in net and denied three of four shootout shooters he opposed to take the shootout loss in net. The loss is Parks’ first defeat after regulation since an overtime loss at Evansville December 23.
