FireAntz Can’t Fool Phaneuf, Rivermen Saturday

Hoomaian, Hagaman tallies, 20 Phaneuf saves lift Rivermen past FireAntz

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen got a shutout in their own net and fooled the opposing goaltender twice en route to a 2-0 win over the Fayetteville FireAntz Saturday at Carver Arena. The win, Peoria’s second straight, lifts the Rivermen to 30-12-11 on the season with three games remaining in the regular season.

After a scoreless first period the Rivermen got on the board late in the second period while on the power play. With FireAntz winger Brad Drobot in the sin bin for roughing at 16:12 of the second, Rivermen defenseman Dave Pszenyczny fed a pass from the high slot to teammate Alec Hagaman above the right circle. Hagaman skated into the ring and flicked a wrister that was deflected by Justin Hoomaian past FireAntz goaltender Sean Bonar at 18:00 of the frame for a 1-0 Rivermen lead.

Peoria added to their lead just past the halfway point of the third period. Rivermen winger Connor Gorman sent a long pass to Hagaman, who collected and went in one on one against Bonar. Hagaman deked Bonar down to his belly and slid the puck around the goaltender’s outstretched leg for a 2-0 Rivermen lead at 12:19 of the third.

Phaneuf earned the win between the pipes for the Rivermen, stopping all 20 shots directed towards him for his third career shutout. With the win the Rivermen netminder improves to 12-5-3 on the season.
