Leading Goal Scorer Dion Returns to Rivermen Attack

Veteran winger led Peoria with 24 tallies in 48 games during 2016-17

Peoria, IL – The Peoria Rivermen announced today that the team has inked veteran winger Cody Dion to a training camp deal prior to the 2017-18 season. Dion returns to the Rivermen after leading the team with 24 goals in just 48 games last season.

Dion, 27, finished the 2016-17 regular season second on the Rivermen roster with 39 total points, and his seven power-play goals and six game-winners were also team highs. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder added five goals in seven postseason contests, one shy of the league lead for the Presidents Cup Playoffs.

“Getting Cody back this year is huge for our offense” said Rivermen head coach Jean-Guy Trudel. “He’s so effective at using his big body to create traffic in front of the opposing net at even strength and on the power play, and his leadership presence on and off the ice will be big for us as we move forward in our pursuit of a championship this season.”

Dion joined the Rivermen in late February 2016, totaling seven goals and five assists in 16 games to finish the 2015-16 season, adding a goal and two helpers in seven postseason games during the 2016 playoffs as Peoria advanced to the Presidents Cup Finals. For his SPHL career, the 6-foot-5 240-pound native of Colorado Springs, CO has seen action in 120 regular-season contests, posting 49 goals and 33 assists.

Dion joins winger Mike Gurtler, defensemen Ben Oskroba, Kevin Kirisits, and Kyle LeBrun, and goaltender Spencer Bacon on Peoria’s training camp ledger. The Rivermen are expected open camp in early October prior to October 21’s season opener at Evansville, with a precise training camp schedule to be determined.
